The credential
BCaBA vs BCBA: two BACB levels compared, with the RBT step below them
The difference between a BCaBA® (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst) and a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) is independence: the BCaBA is a bachelor's-level credential that lets you practice only under a supervising BCBA, while the master's-level BCBA practices independently and supervises others. The RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) sits one step below both and delivers sessions under supervision. Each number below carries its date and its own BACB source.
BCaBA vs BCBA vs RBT in one table
Each row is a decision you will face, from the degree you need to who signs your supervision forms. Assistant-level numbers come from the BCaBA Handbook (updated June 2026); BCBA numbers from the BCBA Handbook; RBT numbers from the RBT Handbook, all checked 14 October 2026. Where our sources give no figure, the cell names the rule.

The real difference: independence and supervision
In a working day the line between the two credentials comes down to one question: whose name sits above yours on the case. An assistant analyst needs a BCBA supervisor on record for every client, per the handbook. A BCBA answers to the Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts and the BACB, not to another analyst. Most of the other differences follow from that.
BCaBA
- Develops and carries out programs inside a plan a BCBA oversees.
- Needs a BCBA supervisor on record for every client.
- May supervise, train and assess RBTs once the 8-hour supervision training is done.
- May not supervise anyone's BACB fieldwork.
BCBA
- Designs and evaluates programs on their own authority.
- Practices without a supervisor.
- Supervises BCaBAs, RBTs and fieldwork trainees.
The tellAsk who answers for the plan if it is wrong. If the answer is a supervisor, you are describing the assistant seat.
The supervision you still owe after certification
Certification does not end your own supervision. A BCaBA owes 5% of monthly service hours for the first 1,000 hours and 2% after that under the current handbook, and a flat 5% from 1 January 2027 (as the handbook words it, for those whose recertification falls on or after that date) plus a quarterly client observation; the supervision hours page runs the numbers for a sample month.
Education and fieldwork side by side
The assistant credential is the only one of the three that turns a bachelor's degree into analyst-level work, which is why it suits people already working in ABA without a graduate program. Applications through 31 December 2026 follow the 2022 rules: Pathway 1 is a bachelor's or higher from an ABAI-accredited program, conferred in 2015 or later; Pathway 2 is a bachelor's in any field plus 225 hours of behavior-analytic coursework, per the BCaBA Handbook (updated June 2026). Both pathways then need supervised fieldwork, at least 40% of it unrestricted.
The BCBA route starts from a master's degree and asks for more fieldwork: 2,000 hours Supervised or 1,500 hours Concentrated, per the BCBA Handbook (checked 14 October 2026). Its coursework sits at graduate level and is defined in that handbook, not in the assistant one.
Logged at the monthly ceiling, assistant fieldwork still takes 5 to 10 months depending on type and rule set, and far longer at an ordinary pace; the supervision hours page does the division. The full route, step by step, is on the how-to-qualify page.
The BCaBA and BCBA exams compared
Both exams give you 4 hours; the assistant exam asks fewer questions in that time and draws them from a narrower outline. Under the 6th-edition outline, per the current BCaBA Handbook (updated June 2026), it is 175 questions, 150 scored and 25 unscored, four options each, and the 4 hours include the tutorial and terms. It is taken at Pearson VUE test centers or US military bases, never online. The BCBA exam is 185 questions, 175 scored and 10 unscored, also in 4 hours, per the BCBA Handbook.
| Feature | BCaBA exam | BCBA exam |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 175 | 185 |
| Scored | 150 | 175 |
| Unscored | 25 | 10 |
| Time | 4 h | 4 h |
| 4 h split per question | about 82 seconds | about 78 seconds |
| Content | Test Content Outline (6th ed.): 9 sections, 90 tasks | The BCBA's own outline |
Seconds per question is plain division of 240 minutes, before any tutorial time comes off.
The difference that matters for study is scope. The assistant outline keeps to simple schedules of reinforcement, unconditioned motivating operations and the elementary verbal operants; compound schedules and conditioned MOs are BCBA ground. In return it carries tasks written from the assistant's seat: recognizing when to seek the supervisor's guidance (E.3), moving to a different supervisor (E.6), and Section I, Supervisory Relationships, with 15 scored items about supervising RBTs while you are supervised yourself.
Shorter is not the same as lighter. The assistant pass point comes from a modified Angoff study and no percentage is published, so there is no score to set against the BCBA's. The one assistant-level figure worth knowing: 60% of first-time candidates passed in 2025 (BACB pass-rate data). Format, booking and attempts are covered on the exam page.
Where the RBT fits: BCaBA vs RBT
The RBT is the entry rung: age 18 or older, high school, a 40-hour training and a competency assessment, then an 85-question exam (75 scored, 10 unscored) in 90 minutes on the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.), in effect since 1 January 2026, per the RBT Handbook (checked 14 October 2026). An RBT delivers sessions under supervision and supervises nobody.
RBT
- Implements the plan, session by session.
- Works only under ongoing supervision, which a BCaBA may provide.
- No degree and no fieldwork hours required.
- Exam: 85 items in 90 minutes.
BCaBA
- Develops programs and monitors the data inside a BCBA-overseen plan.
- May supervise, train and assess RBTs.
- Needs a bachelor's, coursework and supervised fieldwork.
- Exam: 175 items in 4 hours.
The tellThe RBT carries out the plan; the assistant analyst helps build it, reads the graphs and supervises the people carrying it out.
You do not need to be an RBT first; the assistant requirements name no prior credential. If you are one, plan around two details. Session work under a written plan is mostly restricted activity, while the 2022 rules want at least 40% of fieldwork unrestricted (assessment, program writing, graphing, training others), and those hours only count when logged under the fieldwork rules with a BCBA fieldwork supervisor. Once you are certified at the assistant level, your RBT certification expires after 180 days, per the handbook. The logging side is on the supervision hours page; the full route from RBT is on the how-to-qualify page.
Which one should you aim for?
Pick by the degree you hold and the one you are prepared to earn, then check demand where you live. The assistant credential is small: 4,931 active certificants against 88,013 BCBAs as of 1 October 2026 (BACB certificant data). It is also tested in fewer places than it once was: the US, Canada except Quebec and Ontario, and Australia only until 1 January 2027, per the BCaBA Handbook.
- You hold a bachelor's and want analyst-level work now. The assistant credential is your route, provided a BCBA where you work can supervise you for every client.
- You are in, or about to start, a master's in behavior analysis. Aim straight at the BCBA. The assistant step adds an exam and a certification that lapses once you move up.
- You want to start in ABA without a degree. The RBT is the door; the assistant level waits until the bachelor's is finished.
- Your employer or region hires few assistant analysts. Check job postings and your state board before you invest; the handbook asks you to contact the board before practicing where assistant-level practice is regulated.
No pay figures here: the BACB publishes none, so ask employers what the assistant role covers. For what the credential involves end to end, start at the site overview.
Using the BCaBA as a step to the BCBA
Many holders use the assistant credential as a working stage: analyst-level practice, under supervision, while they finish a master's. Plan the exit as carefully as the entry, because the BACB lets you hold one certification at a time.
While you hold the BCaBA
Recertify every 2 years with 20 CEUs, 4 of them in ethics, plus 3 in supervision if you supervise RBTs, per the handbook.
During the master's
Log hours against the BCBA requirements from the first month, with a BCBA as your fieldwork supervisor: 2,000 Supervised or 1,500 Concentrated, per the BCBA Handbook.
The BCBA exam
185 questions, 175 scored, in 4 hours. What you learned for the 150-item assistant exam carries over; compound schedules and conditioned MOs are the new ground.
After you pass
Your assistant certification expires 180 days after you obtain the BCBA, per the handbook. Use the window to hand over your RBT supervision and update your title wherever it appears.

FAQ
01What is the difference between a BCBA and a BCaBA?
Education and independence. The BCaBA is earned on a bachelor's degree and practices only under a supervising BCBA; the BCBA needs a master's, practices independently and may supervise assistants, RBTs and fieldwork. The exams differ as well: 175 questions under the assistant's 6th-edition outline, 185 for the BCBA, both in 4 hours.
02Which is better for me, becoming a BCaBA or a BCBA?
With a bachelor's and a wish to work at analyst level now, the BCaBA. If you are already in or near a master's in behavior analysis, the BCBA: the assistant certification expires 180 days after you obtain the higher one. Check that employers near you hire assistant analysts first.
03What can a BCaBA not do?
Practice without a BCBA supervisor on record, supervise BACB fieldwork, or present themselves as an independent behavior analyst. With no supervisor on record the certification is inactive: no practicing, billing, or supervising or training RBTs, per the handbook.
04Is the BCaBA exam easier than the BCBA?
It is shorter and narrower: 150 scored questions against 175, on a smaller outline. The assistant exam publishes no pass percentage, so difficulty cannot be compared by score; what is published is that 60% of first-time candidates passed in 2025 (BACB pass-rate data).
05Can you be a BCaBA without being an RBT?
Yes. The requirements are a bachelor's degree (ABAI-accredited, or any field plus coursework) and supervised fieldwork; an RBT credential is not on the list. If you are an RBT, that certification expires 180 days after you earn the BCaBA.
06BCaBA vs RBT: which comes first?
Usually the RBT: it needs no degree, only age 18 or older, high school, a 40-hour training and a competency assessment. An RBT works under supervision and supervises no one; an assistant analyst can supervise RBTs after an 8-hour supervision training.
