Behind the chart

Who makes Steady State, and how a BCaBA practice item earns its place

Steady State is a free, independent practice site for the BCaBA® (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst) exam. Every question here was written for this site against the Test Content Outline (6th ed.), the outline the exam has followed since 2025.

Three things to know first

  • Who keeps it. Steady State is kept up by the same small team that publishes the BCaBA practice app for iPhone. Reading and practicing here costs nothing; the app is what funds the work, which is why its buttons appear on most pages.
  • Who it is not. No one on that team works for the BACB or for Pearson VUE. The names BACB, BCaBA, BCBA and RBT are used only to say which credentials a page is about.
  • What it cannot contain. No one here has seen a live exam form. The BCaBA Handbook makes exam items confidential and bars sharing or reconstructing them, so treat any page that claims to offer them as a reason to close the tab.

There are no staff profiles on these pages. Judge the site by its method, set out below, and by the BACB link beside each changeable figure. For the whole route from role to result, start at the overview.

Where a practice item comes from

An item starts from one task of the outline and keeps that code (G.4, C.6) and its section letter for life. Four options, one key, four notes. The note under a distractor names the procedure or measure it really describes and the one detail that rules it out, so whole-interval versus partial-interval, or DRA versus DRO, ends as a lesson rather than a red mark.

Each item is first worked cold: stem and four options on screen, key and notes hidden. A mismatch with the stored key sends it back for repair. Any item whose wording changes is worked cold again by a second, separate pass, which then reads the key, the explanation and every note against the outline, the Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts and the handbook. Repaired items go through both passes again; an item that still fails is cut, since a smaller bank costs less than one wrong key.

What an item is held against, and what sends it back
Held againstSent back when
The stored keyThe cold answer picks a different option
The 6th-edition outlineIt tests a task the BCaBA outline leaves out, such as compound schedules
Its own option notesA note argues for an option other than the key
Ethics Code and handbookThe explanation contradicts either one

How the trials are spread across the site

The code on every item is what lets the 60 trials of the practice exam copy the outline's weights: 9 from Section G, Behavior-Change Procedures, which carries 22 of the 150 scored items, down to 4 from Section A, which carries 10. The two section guides hold 12 more each, and the home and exam pages three each.

Each item lives on one page only, so moving between pages never repeats a question. What every section covers, under its old name the task list, is laid out on the outline hub.

Dates, sources and corrections

Exam facts here were checked 14 October 2026 against bacb.com. Figures such as 175 questions, 150 of them scored, in 4 hours are given under the 6th-edition outline, per the current BCaBA Handbook (updated June 2026). Hour counts for coursework and fieldwork always name the date they apply from, since the rules move on 1 January 2027.

If a page here and the BACB ever disagree, follow the BACB; the page will be fixed. The contact page explains how to flag it.
